Should We Partner with a Charity in Our Community?

Why should you consider partnering with a charity?

It’s a great question, and the answer can make a huge difference for your business. So many businesses, especially when they’re starting out, struggle to really get established. They have a hard time attracting the right customers, attracting enough customers, and becoming a “hometown brand.”

Where we live, there are several “hometown brands” that, if you drop their name, everyone in town knows them. We all want to have a business with that kind of name recognition. Well, the truth is, getting that kind of name recognition isn’t easy and it isn’t fast. It takes time. But it is possible.

Problem

Building strong, local brand recognition takes time and isn’t always easy.

You want your business to be the one people think of first, but it’s tough to break through the noise, especially in the early days.

So how do you get there?

How do you become the business everyone in the community knows and trusts?

Solution

One way to build that recognition is to partner with a local charity.

But here’s the thing—you should never do this just for publicity. Everyone will know when you’re being inauthentic. And inauthentic is repulsive. However, most of us do have a really good “why” for why we’re doing business. We have issues that we care about.

For example, a local mattress store in our area partners with a local charity that builds beds for families in need. With every mattress sold, a portion goes toward providing beds to those who need them most, ensuring more people in the community have a comfortable place to sleep. It’s a cause close to their hearts so they found a way to get involved in a way that they do best— and help people get a good night’s sleep.

Success

So, why should you consider partnering with a charity?
When your business supports causes that truly matter, people begin to treat you like you’re a business that really matters.

They will want to shop with you.

They will want to support the causes that you support.

And when they do, you become the kind of store that your community actually wants to shop at.

Now What

Here’s a few simple steps you can take right now:

  1. Make a list of 2-3 causes that matter to you.
If money were no object, what would you go do in your community today?
Volunteering at a hospital? Working at an animal shelter? Helping at a nursing home?
Whatever it is, write it down.

  2. Reach out.
    Call some those organizations.
Ask what kind of needs they have.

  3. Get involved.
Invite your community to be a part of meeting the needs of those organizations!

At Trellis Marketing, we feel a responsibility to steward our business and our resources well. Because we believe that right now doesn’t just count for right now, but it counts for all eternity. If there’s a cause that genuinely matters to you, get involved with a local charity and support the bigger “why” behind why you do what you do.
